[Abstract]:
“Will the sun rise tomorrow? This naïve question covers profound questions of philosophy, especially worked out by David Hume. Is it possible to ensure from the regular experiences of the past the need for a future event? What is the validity of this reasoning? What is the basis of human understanding if this type of inference is not valid? Problems like these represent the passage from metaphysical problems (which ask about what there is) to epistemological problems (that ask about the ways of access to what there is). The aim of this text is to retake this kind of metaphysical-epistemological question under the eyes of two philosophers who stand out in the discussions of this group: Charles S. Peirce and Quentin Meillassoux. It is interesting to return to the subject, already treated in the post of Gustavo Rick, of the distance between Peirce’s philosophical proposal (pragmatism) and Meillassoux’s (anti-correlationism), the latter, basis for the subsequent development of speculative realism. In the post mentioned, the distance between Peirce and Meillassoux was already clear (says Gustavo Rick: “Meillassoux’s anti-correlationist project is incompatible with Peircean philosophy”). Next, we will reflect a little more on such differences by asking for both philosophical systems what they would have to say about our certainty that the sun will be rise tomorrow.”
Qual a validade desse raciocínio?
